Locals know that Aspen is idyllic in the summer with its bluebird skies, crisp mountain air, and moderate temperatures. Ski season may be over, but the longer days of summer afford more opportunities for other outdoor adventures. With abundant access to lakes and trails, activities like hiking, biking, fishing, and camping are available. Meanwhile, the variety of different festivals and markets provide options for culture enthusiasts to be entertained. Let’s explore some of our favorite things to do in Aspen during the summer months.

Maroon Bells

When it comes to images of Aspen, few things are more iconic than the Maroon Bells. One of Aspen’s most popular attractions, the twin peaks are a prime destination for visitors for a reason. Rising over 14,000 feet above sea level, the Maroon Bells stand out against the mirror-like reflection of Maroon Lake, creating a postcard-like backdrop that will stun you with its magnificence. Summer also brings abundant wildflowers through the alpine meadows, further enhancing its beauty.

The Maroon Bells scenic area features multiple trails that range from short hikes to longer overnight backpacking trips into the Maroon Snowmass Wilderness. Take note: if you are looking to camp, reservations are required for certain campsites in addition to permits for overnight parking.

If day hikes are more your speed, there are a variety of trails to explore. The Maroon Lake Scenic Trail is an easy 1-mile hike around the lake that allows you to take in the breathtaking beauty firsthand, while the Maroon Creek Trail is a longer, less crowded alternative. For those looking for more of a challenge, Crater Lake Trail will bring you to the base of the lake through a constant, uphill grade over rocky trails and through aspen groves.

The Roaring Fork Transportation Authority also provides a daily shuttle from late May through October for those looking to shuttle to the area. Just be prepared, as the shuttle is popular and reservations are required. To get more information on the shuttle times and to book a reservation, check out their website.

Hiking and Biking Trails

If you are looking for more hiking and biking opportunities outside of the popular Maroon Bells area, Aspen offers one of the largest trail systems in the state. The Roaring Fork Valley affords access to some of the best trails around for hikers of all experience levels. There are plenty of choices among valleys and mountain peaks that include popular areas such as Smuggler Mountain, Ute Trail, Grottos, and Castle Creek Valley. From picnic areas to high-mountain excursions, there are endless options to explore.

The City of Aspen’s website offers more information on the immense trail system to help you prepare.

The Aspen Saturday Market

In search of a leisurely way to spend a Saturday morning? Check out the local farmer’s market. Open on Saturdays from 8:30-2:00 from mid-June to early October, the Aspen Saturday Market is a favorite of locals and a great way to start the weekend. Stroll through the diverse marketplace and shop for Colorado-grown fruits, vegetables, bread, meats, cheeses, flowers, and handmade crafts from local vendors.

In addition to food trucks and other activities, the market also offers live music throughout the day. Grab your fresh veggies, enjoy a delicious lunch, and support local farms and artisans.

The 2023 FOOD & WINE Classic is a coveted gastronomic celebration of innovators and icons in the culinary world. Set at the base of majestic Aspen Mountain, this year commemorates 40 years of this iconic festival as one of Colorado’s premier culinary events.

Featuring celebrity chefs, engaging cooking classes, and mouthwatering tastings, the FOOD & WINE Classic is a culinary experience like no other. Aspen Music Festival

Regarded as one of the top classical music festivals in the country, the Aspen Music Festival is the country’s premier summer music festival held every year in Aspen from June through August. From traditional symphonies to more contemporary works, the festival offers a wide variety of performances.

Educational activities will also be available, including lectures, recitals, classes, and workshops. The festival is a unique opportunity for emerging musicians to gain experience performing in front of an audience through young artist programs.

Tickets can be purchased from the Festival and School Website.

Bluegrass Sundays

If you love live music, don’t miss the chance to experience live bluegrass music on Aspen Mountain every Sunday during the summer.

Concerts are held weekly on the lawn of Wagner Park with the gorgeous Elk Mountain Range as the backdrop. Enjoy food and drink at the Sundeck as you listen to the music, then take a scenic trip back down the mountain on the gondola. These concerts are the perfect way to wrap up a weekend with friends and family.

John Denver Sanctuary

Late spring and early summer are ideal times to visit the John Denver Sanctuary. Always one of our favorite recommendations, the sanctuary is a place of tranquility and beauty. Stroll through the sprawling gardens and winding trails and enjoy the natural beauty of the area while you listen to recordings of John Denver’s music. The sanctuary offers several monuments dedicated to his life and work, while the nature trail features educational signs of local flora, fauna, and ecology.
